I was very pleased to be able to get this working, the trick to getting it going after the first time, was to:

Activate the Modem on the XDA II
THEN plug the USB cable into the Laptop
Activate the Dialler
I also discoved I had to disable Active Sync connecting on the Laptop AND on the Pocket PC

Gadget heaven here, the Sound Bug is clever, when travelling, if you find your laptop speakers are too quiet and your ears ache from the headphones, stick this thing on any flat surface and it becomes a speaker. I also like the cigarette box guitar amp too. The joy of stuff!
